Don’t listen to the sales person, he is there to move the tv is promoting. It is a cheap brand and made of cheap parts. Go online to Home Theater Magazine and read the reviews on tvs. You will notice that Panasonic has a tv recommended in each price category of entry level to the high end, while Sony, Samsung and Toshiba does not (December issue). Other brands like LG, Sharp, Sanyo and Vizio did not even get mentioned. Look at the picture of the tv from an angle and you will notice that the picture of the tv fades. If you read yahoo questions you will notice that most problems on tv are from the cheap brands, like the one the sale person at Best Buy is bragging about. Hope this will help you out.

The sales person is being honest, but in a misleading way!
It’s true that several brands of LCD TVs use parts from common third parties. For instance, Sharp manufactures LCD screens that are used by many other brands like Sony, Insignia and a few other brands! There are also other components in LCD TVs that are shared by many brands like Power Supply boards, Display boards and so on.
So in a way, he’s honest about parts being in Insignia’s as well as other brands. But what he/she didn’t tell you is that the parts in question are NOT made by Insignia and used in other brands. Insignia is just a house brand of Best Buy that contains parts from other companies that also provide parts for other brands!
As for the Insignia brand itself, it’s a decent brand in terms of reliability and performance. I can think of a lot worse brands then Insignia! Brands that are the most reliable and best performing are: Panasonic, Samsung, LG, Sony & Sharp. Insignia would be in the top 10 somewhere!
Insignia used to be very low scale as the other answers suggest, but some (not all) of their latest models scored very well in testing at Consumer Reports. The NS-L42Q-10A (42 inch LCD) is check rated by CR, which means they think its features and price make it a best buy. The NS-L42X-10A scored even higher but costs another $ 100. I’d be comfortable buying it based on the CR recommendation.
