Is a 32 inch 720p TV OK sitting 5 feet from it (or should I be looking for a 1080p TV)?

Question by Jason A: Is a 32 inch 720p TV OK sitting 5 feet from it (or should I be looking for a 1080p TV)?
I’m thinking of buying a 720p 32 inch LCD (the Samsung LN32C450) and sitting 5 feet from it.

I know that 5 feet is not too close for a good viewing experience (most people say that you can be as close to 4 feet from a 32 inch TV), but I am worried that the fact that it is only 720p will be a problem at this close a distance and that maybe I should be looking for a 1080p TV.

My problem is that most 32 inch TVs come in 720p so if I look for a 1080p, my selection is going to be limited.

Thanks for any advice.

If you’re using the TV also as a computer monitor, you’ll prefer 1080p for the improved clarity on small print fonts. Otherwise, for average TV viewing, it’s not going to matter at 32 inches.

There’s very little agreement as to where the dividing line is between 1080p being a noticeable improvement and not. You’ll see everything on this forum from 37 inches on up. But at 32 inches, the consensus is pretty solid that 720p is thoroughly adequate, even at 5 feet.

  1. Go to your store and stand 5′ from the tv you are considering. Some people can see the grain on a 720p tv, others are OK with it. If you can see grain, then get a 1080p, if not go with it. The grain can annoy your eyes over time so take a good look.
